Lathrop family papers document the lives of three generations of an Iowa family. Much of the collection is letters written or addressed to three Lathrop women: Mary Welton Lathrop, her daughter Minnie, and Minnie's cousin Frances Emily Paintin. The letters discuss rural life, the daily lives of these middle class women, and women's activities in general. Material related to Minnie's education is included. Also contains the diary of Maggie Lathrop, spanning sixteen months in the life of a teenage girl. Includes Lathrop family information collected by June Armstrong, 1980s-1998.

Lathrop was born in Hawley, Massachusetts. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in Iowa City in 1847. He worked as a newspaper journalist in Chicago, Des Moines and Iowa City and published in the areas of history and horticulture, contributing many articles to the Annals of Iowa and The Iowa Historical Record.
